Improving Infection Prevention and Antibiotic Use in Long-Term Care: From Guidance to Practice

Starts:  Nov 5, 2026 12:45 (ET)
Ends:  Nov 6, 2026 17:15 (ET)

Join your colleagues to share experiences, discuss challenges, and advance resident safety and quality of care in long-term care! Through expert-led sessions, participants will review updated infection prevention and control (IPC) guidance and antibiotic initiation criteria, with a focus on improving clinical decision making and optimizing antibiotic use. Topics will address common, everyday challenges in long-term care, highlighting practical strategies to support effective infection control, improve clinical decision-making, and reduce unnecessary antibiotic exposure.

Target Audience

  • Physicians and Physicians-in-training: potentially including all specialties/disciplines, eg:
    • Hospitalists
    • Internal Medicine
    • Pediatricians
    • Internists
    • Family Practice/Primary Care
  • Public Health
  • Infection Preventionists
  • Antimicrobial stewardship pharmacists and pharmacy residents
  • Nurses and Nurse Practitioners

Learning Objectives

Following completion of this virtual workshop activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Recognize how the clinical complexity, functional status, and social environment of long-term care residents influence their risk for infection and inform tailored infection prevention and management strategies.
  2. Develop a practical framework to guide clinical decision-making when evaluating suspected infections in long-term care, particularly in situations with diagnostic uncertainty, incorporating updated criteria risk assessment and interprofessional collaboration.
  3. Discuss strategies to implement antibiotic stewardship and IPC approaches in long-term care, given evolving evidence and resource constraints.
  4. Apply key behavioral science theories to design strategies that encourage healthcare workers to adopt evidence-based best practices.
