President's Message: Summer 2025

By Faith Ham posted 08-14-2025 07:30

Dear SHEA Members,

As a nonpartisan organization, we remain steadfast in our mission even as it is tested by shifting public health priorities, funding cuts, and changes in vaccine policy. Navigating these complex dynamics while staying apolitical and responsive to our members' needs guides every SHEA response.

At the heart of our advocacy is our deep commitment to infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship (IP/AS) programs. These programs require sustained investment, robust research, and strong support at the federal, state, and local levels.

As a former SHEA liaison to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), it has been particularly difficult to witness the dismissal of ACIP members amid accusations of conflicts of interest and undue industry influence. In our experience, ACIP has consistently operated with scientific integrity and transparency. SHEA is concerned that limiting access to safe and effective vaccines—such as thimerosal-containing influenza vaccines, which are sometimes critical in large-scale healthcare personnel vaccination clinics—could undermine vaccine uptake and lead to preventable illness and death. We are actively engaged in discussions exploring alternative pathways to ensure immunization efforts remain strong, and we are committed to making sure SHEA members' voices are included.

Looking ahead, SHEA plans to meet with the new CDC Director following confirmation to discuss essential elements of effective infection prevention and stewardship, including what will occur with HICPAC’s projects. If there are specific concerns you would like us to raise in this conversation, please share them with us at info@shea-online.org.
