Dear Colleagues

I am delighted  to embark on a promising year of collaboration, innovation, and progress within the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) as your SHEA president in 2025. Thank you for the privilege of serving as your President, and for your trust and dedication to our shared mission.

As we enter 2025, we are presented with both challenges and opportunities that reinforce the critical importance of healthcare epidemiology, infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship. SHEA members play an essential role in safeguarding public health by analyzing and interpreting epidemiological data, identifying disease transmission patterns, and implementing evidence-based strategies to enhance patient safety and healthcare quality, and protect healthcare personnel. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, we create guidelines, policies, and practices that advance infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and diagnostic stewardship. These efforts ensure that patient and provider well-being remain top priorities within our healthcare systems.

This year, SHEA will focus on strengthening our members’ role in healthcare.  A forthcoming paper led by Dr. Tom Talbot will highlight the essential role of infection prevention programs and their leadership forming the foundation of our efforts to build the business case for increased resources at our institutions and nationally.  We will also leverage member voices for advocacy and media outreach, with a robust plan to proactively respond to policy developments to showcase our unique capabilities.

Your participation will be critical in these efforts to amplify the vital contributions of our profession. I encourage you to engage with SHEA’s vibrant network of professionals, participate in our events, share your insights, and utilize the valuable resources SHEA provides.

2025 promises to be a year of growth and meaningful impact. SHEA remains committed to fostering a thriving community that values collaboration, excellence, and the advancement of evidence-based practices. Together, we will drive innovation in research, education, and policy while expanding our workforce and ensuring recognition for the indispensable work we do.

Thank you for your unwavering commitment to SHEA. I look forward to working with you to shape a future where infection prevention, epidemiology, and antimicrobial stewardship drive meaningful change.

Sincerely

David J. Weber, MD, MPH, FIDSA, FSHEA, FRSM (London)
2025 SHEA President
